In previous article we I have seen how to create an LUN -Logical Unit Number in Storage side, In this article, I will show you the Data store Creation on VMware ESXi 5.1 to store vmx, vmdk, files and ISO file and other VMware related files in VMware infrastructure.
Data stores are logical containers, analogous to file systems that hide specifics of each storage device and provide a uniform model for storing virtual machine files. Data stores can also be used for storing VMware configuration files, ISO images, virtual machine templates, and floppy images.
Step 1: After mapping the LUN to hosts from storage side, Login VCenter Server with VSphere client, just go and refresh the Host storage adapters in VMware.
(Note: this is not necessity to do refresh the storage adaptors every time. Once we successfully mapped an LUN to the hosts in storage side, after few seconds the hosts will detect the LUN.)
Step 2: Go to Home, then select Datastores and Datastore Clusters to view all Datastores.
Step 3:To Create New Datastores: Go to Datastores and Clusters, then Right Click on Cluster Select Add Datastore.
Step 4: Select any Host that you want to save data store on the host.
Step 5: Select a storage type (Disk/LUN) or if that is an NFS file system then select Network File system, then click Next. Here we are using LUN to make Datastore, so i have selected Disk/Lun option.
Step 6: From the list of available volumes (LUNs), select the volume on which you want to create the data store, and then click Next.
Step 7: Select the file system version (if you do not have any ESXi hosts older than 5.0 select VMFS-5) then click ‘Next’
Step 8: Configure the disk layout as desired then Click ‘Next’
Step 10: Enter a name to identify the data store then click ‘Next’
Step 11: Specify the storage capacity then click Click ‘Next’
Step 12: Click ‘Finish’ to complete the process
Yes, that’s it. we have successfully created VM Data store Creation on VMware ESXi 5.1. Now you can do same steps in the new version of VMware ESXi also. if you’re doing in latest versions you’ll find some minor changes will be shown.
Go to the Data stores: the new storage Datastore will be available to use with new or existing virtual machines.
Conclusion : Data store Creation on VMware ESXi is pretty easy and interesting task, I have covered here every step with screenshots. follow this document and create your own Data store on VMware Environment, and to know more about VMware ESXi and it’s operations follow my next coming articles.
