In my previous article, I have explained about HP MSA2040 SAN Storage setup and configuration with hosts, and shown technical details of the SAN Box.
Now I’m going to explain you about LUN -Logical Unit Number in HP MSA 2040 SAN Storage and I am going explaining here with every screenshot. If you see the featured image I hope you will understand about Storage and LUN -Logical Unit Number Creation on the storage side.
In computer storage, a logical unit number, or LUN, is a number used to identify a logical unit, which is a device addressed by the SCSI protocol or Storage Area Network protocols which encapsulate SCSI, such as Fiber Channel or iSCSI.
An LUN may be used with any device which supports read/write operations, such as a tape drive, but is most often used to refer to a logical disk as created on a SAN. Though not technically correct, the term “LUN” is often also used to refer to the logical disk itself
Step 1: login Storage management utility with management IP-address.
After login into the Storage Management Utility Webpage, go and select the vdisk which is already provisioned.
Step 2: Select Provisioning Tab, the select create Volume as shown in below screenshot.
Step 3: Give any name and size for the Volume, then provide the LUN Number as you can find out next time when you’re creating a Datastore or assigning an LUN to Virtual Machine (VM), and Map the volume to the hosts. Here I’m giving to the defaults hosts, Select the checkbox for LUN Mapping to defaults hosts.
Step 4: Confirm Operation: The next screen will show Defaults mappings to the hosts. Simply select yes for creating an LUN.
Processing the request: In this screen, we can find out our LUN name, and now it’s creating the LUN.
Successfully created an LUN, Click OK.
Step 5: Go to the Vdisk, then find out the newly created LUN at the end of the list. For view more details about the LUN, just select the newly created LUN name, the complete details will show as below.
Now go to VMware and check on Host or ESXi hosts side. This is all about LUN – Logical Unit Number Creation in SAN storage.
Conclusion: LUN – Logical Unit Number Creation in HP MSA 2040 is very simple steps, if you follow this procedure, you will able to create and mapping the LUN to registered host with SAN.
